Ibotta App Review: Cash Back Scam or Legit Money Maker?

Use the App Ibotta & Get Paid to Grocery Shop! One of the most popular ways to make money with apps is through cash back shopping. Probably the most popular app out there is Ibotta. I’ve actually made over $200 with the app. I decided since everyone has to grocery shop, might as well write an Ibotta App Review to show you how it works and how you can save some money with this app.

In this Ibotta App Review, I’ll cover how it works, what items are available, how much you’re paid, some Ibotta complaints, and prove to you this app is completely legitimate!

Ibotta App Review

App: Ibotta

Type: Cashback Shopping

Score: 4.5/5

In this Ibotta App Review I gave it a very good score because it’s my favorite cash back shopping app. I’ve been using this app now for a few years and last year I made over $200.

I’ve been paid by this app and it’s by far the most lucrative app that I’ve used. In this Ibotta Review I’ll cover a lot of information about the app, but trust me, this is an app you want to have!

How Does Ibotta Work?

Signing Up/Getting Started

There’s two ways to get started with the Ibotta App. Personally I prefer to visit Ibotta.com and start the sign up process, buy you can also get the app.

The app is available on iPhone and Android devices. Just download the app and enter the referral code:xsolsia, to earn $5 just for joining!

Find Products You Want To Purchase

Once you’re signed up you can see all the stores near you. If you click on a store you can see all the items they pay cash back on and how much each rebate is.

Take a look at the list and see what items you’d like to purchase and get cash back on!

Shop Till You Drop

The next step is the most fun part, go to the store and shop normally. Pick up a few items that you were already going to purchase that’s available for cash back on the Ibotta App.

IMPORTANT: Make sure to get an itemized receipt, you’ll need it in the next step to get paid cash back.

Upload Receipt To Confirm Purchase

Once you’re done shopping you need to upload your receipt. You have two options. Most receipts have barcodes on them, the easiest way is just scan the barcode and Ibotta will automatically find the items you bought that they offer cash back on.

The other option is to take a picture of the receipt and then manually add the items that Ibotta pays cash back on.

Either way Ibotta will take a few hours to approve your receipt. Then your earnings will be available for cash out via PayPal or venmo.

What Items Are Available?

Ibotta pays you cash back on a wide variety of items. There’s a few categories available, but most fall into the grocery items. You’ll occasionally find electronics, home & office, Pet, Automative, and a few other categories as well! For the main category there’s two types of rebates that I’ll cover next.

Ibotta Review Is it a ScamGeneric Rebates

These rebates pay the least, but it’s awesome that you can buy any brand. For example you might see a $.25 rebate for a carton of milk. It doesn’t matter what type of milk you buy, as long as it’s on your receipt you’ll earn $.25 just for purchasing.

Brand Specific Rebates

These rebates are much more specific, but pay more than the generic rebates. Depending on how much the item costs these usually pay from $.25-$3, but some can pay more.

An example would be purchase 1 box of general mills cereal. You can still purchase any one of their cereals, but it must be a general mills brand to get the rebate!

What Stores Are Available?

The easiest way to know what stores are available is to visit Ibotta and join. It will show you what stores near you have cash back available.

But to give you an example any major grocery store is available. You can also find stores like CVS, Dollar General, and Gas Stations near you.

Most likely you’ll be able to find more than a few locations near you that offer cash back.

How Does Ibotta Pay?

The Ibotta App pays via PayPal or venmo once your account reaches $20. You cash out once you reach the $20 mark and your money will be in your account within 48 hours.

Recently they’ve added gift cards as a form of payment. There’s a few options such as Amazon and Walmart that start at $25.

*At this time the cash out amount is $20. I’ve seen this change a few times since I’ve been a member. I can’t guarantee this will be the cash out amount when you join.

How To Earn More At Ibotta

Ibotta does offer a referral program that can help you earn more. Your referrals can also help you reach team bonuses for each month that gives you a few dollar bonus!

At this time you’ll earn $5 for every friend you refer to Ibotta, once they upload their first receipt.

I say “at this time” because this amount has changed a few times since I’ve used this app. Just know that you will get paid to refer your friends and you’ll need to upload one receipt before you can cash out your referrals earnings!

Ibotta App Concerns and Complaints

Only Available At Some Stores

There is some restrictions on what items Ibotta pays cash back, and some offers are only available if you purchase them from a eertain store. From what I’ve seen, almost all stores are available on Ibotta, but the store you prefer may have a limited amount of offers available compared to others.

Only Paid For Some Items

There is some apps out there that pays you for every item you buy, it’s basically getting paid to upload a receipt. Although those apps are nice, they are paying pennies compare to Ibotta.

When you get cash back on Ibotta you’ll earn $.25-$5 where you may earn $.05 for uploading your receipt. Although you don’t get paid to purchase all items, you can still earn much more if you just purchase a few items listed on Ibotta.

Cash Out Amount Changes

Since I’ve been a member of this app the cash out amount has changed a few times. I think it has to do with how big of a sign up bonus they are offering and if you refer other members.

It’s not a huge deal because it’s nothing outrageous, but it could affect how long it takes you to reach the cash out amount and actually get paid.

Proof Ibotta Is Legitimate

Like I mentioned at the beginning of this review, last year I made over $200 with this app. I’ve included payment proof directly to my PayPal account below:

Thanks for making us aware that ibotta is not a scam. I’ve been looking for some other ways to make money and this looks like it might be a contender. However it doesn’t seem like a lot of money for the effort, what is your experience? If you were working on this full-time what do you think the earning potential is? By comparison, have you looked at any other schemes like this and what was your thoughts? Is this the best out of them?

    Hey Brendan

Thanks for reading my Ibotta Review. Really it’s not much effort at all. Spend 5 minutes at the end of every shopping trip and you’ll get cash back through the app. There’s not really any way to work at this full time. You have to have receipts after purchasing something so the only time this works is after you’ve been shopping.

I’ve been using the app for a year or so and have made right around $500 from referring a few friends, but mainly getting cash back for my shopping. Like I said it’s just extra income and it’s not a full time type of work. Just spend a few minutes scanning your receipt after you shop and you’ll earn cash!

    Hope this helps,

I am fairly new to Ibotta. At first, I really like it, however, recently I submitted a receipt that would give me the first payout and it was rejected as it was “unreadable.” I was asked to resubmit the receipt through the app and when I went in to do it, all the applicable rebates were gone. Hopefully, this will get resolved but I am feeling like I got ripped off and am now questioning whether this app is legitimate…. and not a scam.

    Brok - February 3, 2017 Reply

Very sorry to hear that Carra! I can tell you from experience that Ibotta is not a scam, but of course, that’s not a good experience to have. You might want to contact support to see if they can help in any way. If you have any additional questions or experiences please keep on sharing.

I tried to get into to Ibotta but I ended up being too lazy to use it.

I think the first couple times I had issues uploading the pictures of the receipts, I don’t remember a bar code option.

Maybe the app has gotten better since then. I will have to give it another shot with your referral code!

    Brok - March 3, 2017 Reply

Thank you for reading my Ibotta Review Jeremy. I’m not sure how long ago you used the app, but I’ve been using it for a few years now and they’ve made some major improvements. One thing to note on the barcode, some stores don’t have them, but most do. If they do it only takes a second to take the picture.

Hopefully the review helps you get back to saving, but I understand sometimes it’s difficult to take the time to earn a few bucks here and there.

As of this morning I’m feeling like this is a scam. I cant remember my password due to not using the app in awhile & it wont let me change my email without it so that I can get the password reset link due to being locked out of my email that i signed up with. If i loose out on the $ ive earned for having to make a new account im gonna be even more upset. My app is linked to my facebook with the email im wanting to use anyway, but the app is not letting me edit profile cause i cant remember my password & i cant recieve the reset link. They also have NO way to contact them by phone! Legimate companies have phone, email, the whole shabang to reach them for account issues!

I finally got over $20 in rebates so I wanted to cash out. The app said it was sending an email to confirm my account but the email never came. Tried it twice now. I checked spam and junk mail.

    Brok - May 30, 2017 Reply

    Hey Sylvia,

If you’re having issues I’d contact the support team.

I’m not much help because I’m not part of the company.

Emailed received today from ibotta that I must reactivate their app to extend it or they will begin to charge me $3.99 per month! I had deleted the app from my devices within a very short time without having received any rebates on what I had bought. Now, tried to login in to account to review any activity and my information does not match what they have. I write down every website/password where and when I sign up so this doesn’t make sense. Contacting them to stop their extortionist method.

This may be a silly question, but what happens if you buy items, copy your receipt, and then return those items for a refund?

ScamBuster - October 11, 2017 Reply

I have yet to see a SINGLE comment from someone stating the app works and is not a scam, except for those saying, “click this link…” which is just more advertisement… lol

Anyone ACTUALLY use this app and receive their payout? PS: Your comment doesn’t count if it includes another advertisement..

To the blog writer, did you receive any gifts, cash, or promotion codes for writing this blog? 🙂 It will be hard to believe your response and frankly, it’s hard to believe your blog post itself is unbiased since you already included advertisement in your review.

    Brok - October 11, 2017 Reply

I did not receive any gifts, cash, or promotion codes for writing this review, but I do use the app and take advantage of their referral program. If you choose to enter my referral code when you join there is a chance I’ll receive compensation.

With that being said, I’ve used the app for several years now and have been paid, which I included in the review. The apps I recommend on this blog are ones that I use and have been paid by so I know they’re legitimate.

I appreciate you taking the time to read and leave a comment.

Not really worth the trouble. By “trouble”, I mean trying to make sure you purchase the EXACT product listed by Ibotta.

Their rebate choices are limited and quite often, the barcodes don’t match and your rebate request will be rejected.

A nice way to get back a few bucks but not worth jumping through hoops for. For example, they suddenly dropped Uber ($1.00 rebate per ride) and just as quickly it came back.

Many of the items eligible for rebates are already over-priced so the savings are an illusion.

Use it if / when you think about it but don’t go out of your way to use it.

I’ve been using Ibotta for a while now – since March 2017 – and so far my total savings are $224.66. Now this may not seem like alot, but I only shop for myself and my husband. For someone with a family/kids to shop for I’m sure they save alot more. I love taking my earnings and putting it towards whatever vacation is coming up. Right now is a good time to join because they added tons of store bonuses which is great for holiday shopping.

If you’re thinking of trying out the app, feel free to use my referral code to get $10 back with your first receipt cash-in! Use code HLFVYLU when you join. Hope you like the app as much as I do! As a team we can work towards monthly bonuses as well 🙂

I had used the app for several weeks and accumulated 107$ in cash back, including some referral bonuses. I had uploaded my receipts and had scanned all the bar codes properly. The app had said that all my purchases and bonuses had been verified.

I verified my account and set up the withdrawal process through my PayPal.

Now, Ibotta has locked me out of my account and is not allowing me to withdraw my money.

If I had been the first person to make a complaint, I could believe this was a one-off technical incident. Instead, it seems like this is an unethical tactic that the company typically uses to prevent people from getting the money they have earned.

The company has not responded to my emails, and hopefully this will get their attention.

I am extremely disappointed and unless I hear from Ibotta soon I will stop referring people to the app and refrain from using it.

I am disgusted at this reoccurring scam being ran by this company.
